12-Australia and New Zealand Text

Australia and New Zealand have many common links. Both countries were recently settled by Europeans, are predominantly English speaking and in that sense, share a common cultural . Although in close proximity to one another, both countries are geographically isolated and have small populations by world . They have similar histories and enjoy close relations on many fronts. In terms of population , Australia and New Zealand have much in common. Both countries have minority indigenous populations, and during the latter half of the 20th century have seen a steady stream of migrants from a variety of regions throughout the world. Both countries have similar declines in fertility since the high levels recorded during the baby boom, and alongside this have enjoyed the benefits of continually improving life expectancy. One consequence of these trends is that both countries are faced with an ageing population, and the challenge of providing appropriate care and support for this growing group within the community.

Model Answers with Explanation :
1- heritage : ✅ إرث / تراث
The blank space should be filled with "heritage" because the sentence is talking about historical and cultural connections of Australia and New Zealand. The word "heritage" refers to traditions, achievements, beliefs, and experiences that are part of the history of a group or a nation.

The blank space in the sentence should be filled with "heritage" because the context is referring to shared cultural history or traditions. The term "heritage" refers to the customs, practices, places, objects, artistic expressions and values that are passed down from previous generations.

* Neither "asset", "appearance", nor "prestige" would not accurately represent the shared culture and history between these two countries.

* "Asset" doesn't fit because it generally refers to a useful or valuable thing or person, not a shared cultural characteristic.

* "Appearance" doesn't fit because it generally refers to the way that someone or something looks, not a shared cultural characteristic.

* "Prestige" هيبة doesn't fit because it generally refers to widespread respect and admiration felt for someone or something on the basis of a perception of their achievements or quality, not a shared cultural characteristic.

* Therefore, "heritage" is the most appropriate word to fill in the blank in this context.

2- characteristics : ✅ صفات
In this context, "characteristics" is the most suitable word to fill in the blank because the sentence is specifically discussing qualities or features regarding the populations of Australia and New Zealand. Here's why the other options are less appropriate:

* "Senses": This term usually refers to faculties by which the body perceives an external stimulus; it doesn't fit in the context of discussing population qualities or features.

* "Aspects": While "aspects" could potentially work as it can mean "a part, feature, or phase," it is less specific than "characteristics." "Characteristics" more directly refers to the distinct traits or qualities of the populations in question.

* "Directions": This term usually refers to a course along which someone or something moves or a way in which something can be viewed or interpreted. It doesn't suit the context here, which is about the attributes or features of populations.

* "Characteristics" ✅ is the most appropriate choice because it specifically refers to the distinct features or qualities belonging typically to the populations being described, encompassing the elements of minority status, migration patterns, fertility rates, life expectancy, and age distribution that are discussed in the passage.

3- standards : ✅ المعايير
The blank space should be filled with "standards" because the sentence is comparing the population size of these countries to the rest of the world's population size.

The blank space in the sentence should be filled with "standards" because the context of the sentence is comparing the population size of the two countries to the rest of the world.

"Standards" in this context refers to the average or norm, so "world standards" would refer to the average or typical population size of countries around the world.

* None of the other options ("statistics," "authorities," "records") would make sense in this context as they don't adequately represent the concept of a global measurement or benchmark which is what's being conveyed here.

* "Statistics" could potentially work, but it would change the meaning of the sentence to imply that the countries have small populations according to world population data, which is not necessarily the same as being small by world standards.

* "Authorities" and "records" do not fit in this context because they do not make sense when discussing population size in comparison to the rest of the world. "Authorities" usually refers to people in power or control, and "records" usually refers to documented information or data, neither of which are relevant to the comparison being made in the sentence.

4- experienced : ✅
The blank space in the sentence needs to be filled with "experienced" because the context of the sentence is discussing a change or event that both countries have undergone or lived through, which is a decline in fertility.

The word "experienced" is used when referring to something that has been observed, felt, or undergone. In this case, it's the most appropriate choice because it correctly conveys that the countries have gone through similar declines in fertility.

* On the other hand, "expected" would imply that the countries are predicting or anticipating the decline, which doesn't fit the context because the decline has already happened.

* "Compensated" تعويض would suggest that the countries have made up for the decline in some way, which is not what the sentence is trying to convey.

* "Estimated" would mean that the countries have made an approximate calculation or judgement about the decline, which also doesn't fit because the sentence is stating a fact that has occurred, not a calculation or judgement.

5- associated : ✅ مرتبط

The blank space should be filled with "associated" because it denotes that the challenge of providing care and support for the ageing population is inherently linked or connected to the trend of fertility decline and increasing life expectancy.

* "Favourable"ملائم means beneficial or advantageous, which does not fit in this context as the situation described is presenting a challenge, not a benefit.

* "Comprehensive" شامل means complete or thorough, but in this context, it doesn't indicate the link between the ageing population and the challenge it presents.

* "Irrevocable" غير قابل للإلغاء means unchangeable or irreversible غير قابلة للتغيير أو لا رجعة فيها, which also doesn't fit because it doesn't imply any connection between the ageing population and the challenge it presents.
